BRAZILIAN DOCTORS PRESENT PIONEER STUDY AT THE CONGRESS IN VIENNA

18th Congress of the European Society for Human Reproduction and Embryology – Vienna (Austria).

Research reveals that pregnancy success depends on the position of chromosomes inside the eggs. It is not only the woman’s age that interferes with pregnancy chances. Fertility rates also depend on the chromosome position inside the egg. This conclusion is part of a study developed by the Clinic and Research Center in Human Reproduction Roger Abdelmassih and presented at the 18th Congress of the European Society for Human Reproduction and Embryology in Vienna (Austria).

“This discovery will change the present criteria for egg selection in the IVF procedures and enhance pregnancy chances at about 20%”, predicts Dr. Roger Abdelmassih, specialist in human reproduction and responsible for the study.

Research results were obtained using cutting edge technology, the “spindle view”, which permits to see the egg genetic material. This instrument is in use at the Abdelmassih Clinic for about four months and is the only one in Brazil.

In the work presented in Vienna, specialists evaluated 25 patients with a mean age of 35 years who submitted to IVF. It was veryfied that in the group of women bearing “dislocated” chromosomes, pregnancy rates were 62%. Among those ones with “normal” chromosomes the rate was 83%, regardless of age. Analysis of embryos formed by fecundation also showed that, in the first group, only 21% were excellent, whereas in the second group, 56% could be rated as excellent and had more chances of survival.
